I’ve told many people that I feel the SaMS course prepared me better for the MRCOG Part 3 Examinations than any of the UK courses I attended. Definitely a course I would recommend others to attend!
For me, finding the balance between demonstrating my knowledge and when to actively listen was of paramount importance. You cannot pass without knowledge but soft skills are essential to getting through the Part 3 exams. The challenge really is to be able to address/cover the relevant domains within 10 minutes, while demonstrating empathy and compassion. Patient Safety is one of the most important yet challenging domains to score in and demonstrating sound clinical acumen and decision making is needed. The SaMS course prepped me well for the MRCOG Part 3 exams.
All stations on the SaMS Course were well constructed and the feedback was invaluable. I realised that finding ways to calm myself down on the circuit was crucial as my nerves and anxiety were palpable. For the Part 3 Exams, when stuck or blank, a method I deployed was to ask the simulated patients open ended questions. Let them do the talking and they can rattle off quite a few points for you, while you buy time and hopefully, clues to further streamline your consultation.
I personally feel the SaMS Course had given me the necessary exposure for the MRCOG Part 3 Exams. With 2 circuits (28 stations all together), I managed to gain a good grasp on all the 5 domains tested in the exam. The set up was good and appropriate, and some of the role players were even better compared to the ones in the real exam. Really important to understand what the examiners are looking for in each station, and with respect to each particular domain. Reading and preparing for the station well before entering cannot be further emphasized.
